START OF THE MONITORING

January 2019

DESCRIPTION

The town of Vobarno (BS, Italy), in particular its industrial area, is subject to a relevant risk related to rockfall events, as testified also by historically documented events. For this reason, several rockfall barriers were installed on Mt. Cingolo, with the objective to mitigate the rockfall risk by protecting the road underneath.

Thanks to a collaboration with Incofil Tech, ASE was able to install for the first time the Rockfall Safety Network monitoring system, exploiting this case study as an important pilot site.

The installed system allows for the monitoring of the metal posts inclination and the load applied to upstream steel wire ropes, thanks to the implementation of different sensors. Additionally, a Trigger device is installed in order to detect impacts on the structure. The system includes also several compression load cells to monitor forces applied on the steel wire meshes installed on the slope.

The site is monitored with five BPM Modules, each of them equipped with RSN Link HR 3D sensors and Load Link sensors in order to monitor two separate rockfall barriers installed on-site. Each module is radio-connected to an ASE 801 Control Unit located between the two structures. Additionally, each barrier exploits a Trigger Link to detect rock impacts. Finally, steel wire meshes are monitored thanks to four compression load cells, read by an ASE 201 Control Unit.
